Tennex Group & Nurox Hydrothermal: Driving a Cleaner, Smarter Future for Hazardous Waste using Hydrothermal Deconstruction.
Tennex Group and its subsidiary Interwaste are partnering with Nurox Hydrothermal, a homegrown cleantech innovator, to transform the way hazardous waste is managed – in New Zealand and around the world.
Hazardous waste is one of the toughest environmental challenges that we face, but Nurox’s pioneering Hydrothermal Deconstruction technology is here to change this. Using just heat, water, and air – no harmful chemicals, no toxic emissions – the process safely breaks down complex hazardous materials like PFAS “forever chemicals,” cytotoxic drugs, and industrial residues. The result is Clean water, inert solids, and acetic acid, a valuable by-product that can be reused commercially.
“This partnership is about creating smarter, safer ways to handle hazardous waste while recovering valuable resources,” says Duncan Stewart, Co-founder and CEO of Nurox. “With Interwaste’s support, we’re ready to scale our impact and offer industries a sustainable alternative to offshore incineration.”
While creating a circular, sustainable solution the partnership signals a major leap forward in New Zealand’s clean technology capabilities. Together, Nurox and Interwaste will develop two commercial plants, the first scheduled to open in 2026 at Interwaste’s Mangere facility, followed by a second plant soon after.
These facilities will provide clients across healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and other high-risk industries a cleaner, local solution that eliminates landfill disposal and reduces greenhouse emissions.
As Kelvin Hyland, Chief Executive of Tennex Group, puts it:
“By bringing Nurox’s innovation to market, we’re reducing New Zealand’s reliance on offshore disposal and positioning the country as a leader in sustainable waste solutions.”
The technology’s circular approach means nothing goes to waste:
· Clean water ready for safe reuse or compliant discharge
· Acetic acid for commercial applications
· Recyclable materials like steel, aluminium, and ceramics
Why It Matters
This technology doesn’t just manage waste — it closes the loop. By capturing valuable by-products and reducing emissions, Hydrothermal Deconstruction is:
· Supporting a circular economy
· Driving sustainability and compliance for high-risk industries
· Positioning New Zealand as a global leader in green technology
“By partnering with Nurox, we’re delivering a powerful tool for sustainable waste solutions,” says Kelvin Hyland, Chief Executive of Tennex Group. “This is about innovation, sustainability, and future-proofing our environment.”
